Zines Not Blogs

Zines Are Not Blogs is an interesting, quick read. I’m a little interested in alternative culture lately (some great books in my reading list like Slanted and Enchanted), and as much as I love the internet, there’s something alluring about zines, so finding this was fun.

And without being very familiar with the zine world, while her analysis is a bit zine-biased, it rings true. Physical presence, community, motivation, these things are all different in the zine and alternative culture world, and there’s something special about it. She even touches on the economic/technical requirements of computer and internet access, vs. pen & paper – almost thought she’d miss that. Blogs can engender more author/reader interaction and community discussion, but then, if that’s your goal, yes, you choose blogging as your tool.

Regardless, how great is it that Barnard has a zine library?
