Settling

Found this excellent post on the dearth of grocery stores in some areas of NYC, and the correlation with nutrition-related health issues. Highly recommended reading. Via that site I also came across the Beer Mapping Project. Local food & drink, hurrah! Which reminds me, when is our next Peconic Bay shipment coming?

But what I really wanted to say is, I’m feeling good about this new neighborhood we’re moving to, and our apartment, and our cozy home life. As much as I have personal projects and goals I want to attend to, they intersect with a desire to settle down and grow some new roots for a while. There are a couple CSAs in the area, and it might be fun to start a buying club. Attending to the energy use efficiency & organization of the new apartment will also be important.

Another part of that is moving our money. We’re thinking of joining the New York Metro Federal Credit Union and consolidating some of our debt and savings and that sort of thing. Once settled a bit, I’m also hoping to hook into one or two local groups that do some sort of activism related to poverty, culture, food, youth, environment – just, one of the things I care about. And also find time to go to Bluestockings and similar places more, read more about global and alternative culture, generally work on building community in my life and hooking into alternative culture in general.

Because, frankly, I’m over popular culture, by and large. It’s increasingly like some foreign culture out there that I’m not a part of. Or, more accurately, American culture feels like a foreign culture, where people have lost sight of what it is to be a regular human being trying to live and enjoy one’s life. But I digress. And should cut this short anyway.
