Commodification of Intimacy

It’s not just that intimacy (and in particular, “access” to female sexuality) has been commodified, it’s that it wasn’t just capitalism that did it. Patriarchy turned females into property and intimacy into afterthought long before capitalism came around.

That’s the thought for today…

(inspired by this and this, two societies where “Sexuality is not a piece of merchandise, but a purely sentimental and amorous matter that implies no mutual constraints,” although still having faults of their own, as it is noted, “Men visit women’s homes, not vice versa. Although women are free to accept and reject whichever partners they choose, a woman who initiates sex is disparaged as a ‘sow in heat charging through the fog.’” Maybe, if intimacy can be transformed in global society as the alter-globalization movement seeks to transform democracy and the economy, maybe, just maybe we could do “visiting relations” better.)
